Ontario Power Generation (OPG) is looking for a results driven Health Physics Technologist professionals to join our team on a temporary basis at your Whitby location.


Working in accordance with prescribed safety procedures and regulations, the key responsibilities of this role include:


Operate, monitor and maintain the external and internal dosimetry systems and to perform specialized measurement, analysis, monitoring, and testing as required by health physics external and internal dosimetry programs and/or environmental monitoring in accordance with approved analytical laboratory procedures.

The responsibilities of the position focus on health physics, radiation protection and conventional safety training associated with a large laboratory environment and the operations of a nuclear generating station.  In accordance with prescribed safety procedures and regulations, the Health Physics Technologist will preform the follow duties:


  • Operate, monitor and maintain the external and internal dosimetry systems according to established standards, procedures, or practices to measure external and internal radiation doses received, including but not limited to, whole body and extremity, bioassay measurement, including samples of urine, feces and blood, in-vivo testing, and personal work-place monitoring.  
  • Perform specialized measurement, analysis, monitoring, and testing as required by health physics.  Configure computers to laboratory instrumentation. Test, revise and modify laboratory databases and software.
  • Operate, check and maintain the environmental monitoring and radioactive waste process monitoring sampling systems.  Perform radiological analysis on the resulting samples.
  • Maintain a clean laboratory. Ensure equipment, instruments, etc., are in good working condition, and materials are properly stored.  Receive, test, use, and dispose of samples, radio-chemicals and chemicals in an appropriate and safe manner. 
  • Prepare and maintain all necessary lab records, radioactive source records, logbooks, test results, investigations, projects, and non-conformance events according to applicable licensing requirements.
  • Prepare chemical and radiological solutions and standards as required using established practices and procedures.  Identify, check, and resolve abnormal analyses.
  • Carry out non-routine radiochemical test and analyses as requested. Participate in the development of alternative analytical methods. Perform acceptance and commissioning tests on new or repaired equipment or supplies.
  • Participate in the design and development of new systems, specialized equipment, and new or revised methods and procedures.  As assigned, prepare or review radiochemical procedures for the operation, maintenance and monitoring of analytical systems. 
  • Perform Quality Control and Quality Assurance functions for field or decentralized dosimetry devices or equipment, analyze results and take action as prescribed.
  •  Operate a company vehicle, as required, in order to travel to various facilities/ community farms, and the like, to participate in the sampling process as well as planting and cultivating gardens to produce samples, in accordance with established safety procedures. 
  •  May be required to perform lab activities in accordance with emergency response procedures that may include working a modified schedule in order to maintain a working lab on a 24-hour basis. 
  • Accountable for the health, safety and well being of self and others, in accordance with technical/operating procedures, standards, and corporate safety rules, and includes the development of technical/operating solutions to problems.




  • Minimum Grade 12; plus 3 years College education specializing in Chemical Engineering Technology, Environmental Science, Biochemistry, Biology, Earth Science or similar field of study or equivalent experience. 




  • 3-5 years of demonstrated experience working in a Health Physics / Chemistry Lab Environment is an asset
  • Prior work experience in the nuclear field considered an asset.
  • Knowledge of general laboratory safety and hazardous chemicals.
  • Health Science / Chemical Engineering Technologist background
  • Solid computer skills; well versed in the Microsoft Office Suite of applications with demonstrated knowledge in MS Access and MS Excel, including the abilities to run complex queries, and database mining and data scrubbing in both of these applications.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to multi-task.
  • Strong, effective communication skills.
  • Ability to plan both independently and with a team to organize time and materials effectively.
  • Ability to think critically, analyze problems logically, and be process-oriented.
  • Flexibility and adaptability to changing work environment and enthusiasm for continued learning.
  • Must hold a valid G driver’s licence in good standing.
