Ontario Power Generation (OPG) is excited to offer two (2) student opportunities in our Strategic Initiatives team within the Strategy & Commercial Markets organization.   The position will be based in Toronto, ON. This is a four (4) or eight (8) months student placement commencing in September 2019.

All students applying for student positions at OPG must meet the below eligibility:

  • Enrolled in a full-time MBA program at a post-secondary institution.
  • Have a minimum average of 70% cumulative GPA.
  • Returning to full-time studies in the same program following the completion of the work term OR requiring the work term or co-op placement to graduate.


The successful candidate will support the development and execution of OPG’s business strategy. You may have the opportunity to assist in a variety of work assignments which may include:

  • Provide assistance to Strategic Initiatives senior staff & management on matters related to OPG’s corporate strategy and strategic planning issues.
  • Support a range of corporate strategic development and planning initiatives, including innovation, growth strategy, and related initiatives.
  • Perform specific assessments and investigations on a range of strategic matters, including mergers & acquisitions and other strategic investments, concepts for new lines of business and others, while working closely with groups from Finance, Treasury, Renewable Generation, Nuclear, and others as required.
  • Facilitate the synthesis and integration of business intelligence, information, and perspectives to support key decision makers within OPG.
  • Assist in the construction of complex financial models related to the economic valuation of energy assets, strategic initiatives and potential acquisition opportunities.
  • Monitor trends and valuations in the market for energy assets.
  • Participate in the identification and origination of potential capital investments, in line with OPG’s growth objectives and potential acquisition opportunities.


  • Must be enrolled as a 1st year student in a full-time Masters of Business Administration (MBA) program at a recognized Canadian University.


Preference may be given to the candidate who has the following skills and qualifications:

  • Understanding of Ontario’s electricity system, its key players, and the broader industry context.
  • Experience with corporate finance in a regulated setting.
  • Experience with project management, and supporting and collaborating with cross-functional teams.
  • Self-motivated and able to show initiative.
  • Strong research, analytical and strategic thinking skills.
  • Strong written, verbal and presentation skills, able to develop presentation materials on short timescales.
  • Fluency in Microsoft tools such as Powerpoint, Excel, and Word.
  • Undergraduate degree in Finance, Business, Engineering, or a related field at a post-secondary institution.

This job will provide you with the following professional development:

  • Understanding of the energy sector, including key strategic drivers affecting OPG and other market participants.
  • Experience with supporting strategic decision making in a large corporate setting through demonstration of analytical, research, communication and project management skills.
  • Business acumen.
