JOB OVERVIEW

Ontario Power Generation is looking for a dynamic, analytical and result driven individual to join our Trading team in downtown Toronto as a Senior Term Trader, focused on electricity trading across the Northeastern region.

 

Reporting to the Senior Manager of Trading (Head Trader), the Senior Term Trader is responsible for managing physical and financial risks. As a member of the Trading team, you will work in collaboration with other team members to collectively meet and exceed financial trading targets.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • Deliver financial targets through trading financial instruments and managing the risks in an electricity trading environment involving physical delivery to and across ISOs, RTOs and counterparties in the Northeastern region (supplementary Alberta experience is an advantage);
  • Relentlessly research, develop and execute new trading opportunities to grow the business;
  • Provide guidance, experience and willingness to lead and develop our talented traders;
  • Negotiate with external counterparts regarding the purchase and sale of electricity and related transmission services;
  • Support the development of future natural gas supply options and acquire gas supply and related services to meet the requirements of generating stations;
  • Work in collaboration with other groups to identify, develop and support new business growth;
  • Ensure all transactional activities are carried out in accordance to policies, standards and controls, meeting code of conduct and regulatory compliance;
  • Gather competitive market intelligence and conditions;
  • Stay abreast of industry and regulatory changes; and
  • Work closely with internal and external stakeholders, develop a strong network of contacts with marketers, brokers and counterparties.

 

EDUCATION

  • Bachelor's Degree in Finance, Math, Engineering, Science, Economics or Business Administration is required; and
  • Master’s of Business Administration (MBA) or Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation is considered an asset, but not required.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

We are seeking a dynamic and experienced trading professional who has the following:

  • Minimum 5 years of proprietary trading experience in the Northeast region including IESO, MISO, PJM, NYISO, ISONE and AESO (an asset) coupled with a deep understanding of energy, capacity, environment and weather;
  • Proven track record and success trading electricity markets for terms from balance of day to 5-years;
  • Competency in North American Gas fundamentals;
  • Advanced financial training, e.g. technical analysis;
  • Fluency in risk management principles & practices;
  • Experience in Bulk Electricity System (BES) operation in addition to fundamental impacts on market price and volatility;
  • Highly motived, and detail oriented individual, strong analytical and modeling capability;
  • Experience developing new trading strategies;
  • Experience and willingness to work with high performing individuals as part of a trading team; where goals and targets are team based targets vs. individual targets;
  • Demonstrated problem solving, time management, and negotiation skills;
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; ability to influence and communicate effectively;
  • Strong interpersonal skills, the ability to develop relationships and work with internal stakeholders in various functions and at all levels; and
  • Experience working within a highly standardized process of procedural safety and regulatory compliance.
