JOB OVERVIEW

Ontario Power Generation (OPG) is looking for a results driven, analytical tax professional to join our team in the role of Senior Manager, Taxation, for our Downtown Toronto location. 

Reporting to the Director, Taxation, the Senior Manager, Taxation will be part of a collaborative team that is highly regarded by our business partner(s) and where you will have the opportunity to participate in complex and interesting tax matters including working on new and unique long-term initiatives. 

The Taxation department at OPG fulfils an important role in the organization and is responsible for corporate and commodity taxes. Its functions include reporting, compliance, advice, participation in revenue requirement submissions to regulatory authorities, tax incentives, planning for acquisitions and dispositions, tax structuring for pension and nuclear fund investments. The Taxation department is a key contributor and partner in all of OPG’s initiatives.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • Review monthly, quarterly and annual tax provision, external reporting and working with external auditors with support from a direct report;
  • Advice on tax aspects of investments made by OPG pension plan and nuclear waste management and decommissioning funds – work with external advisors on such transactions;
  • Coordinate and manage US tax compliance and filings prepared by external firm;
  • Advice business units on income tax matters including structuring advice and contracts review; 
  • Coordinate and monitor the activities of the external advisors; 
  • Provide tax advice with respect to taxation of benefits based on provisions of OPG’s collective agreements; 
  • Provide tax related support to business units with respect to planning for major capital projects including new builds, refurbishing existing facilities etc.; 
  • Monitor developments relating to tax incentives including SRED deductions and ITC’s, accelerated depreciation for tax and other industry related incentives; 

OTHER ACCOUNTABILITIES

Review monthly tax expense analysis and annual forecast

  • Assist with other functions within Taxation such as hydro revenue requirement submissions and contracts review
  • Opportunity to learn and support other tax responsibilities including regulatory rate submissions, special financial statements for regulatory reporting, tax variance accounts
  • Assist with the on going development of policies and procedures to ensure compliance with Canadian tax requirements.
  • Stay current with developments in the tax area especially ones that impact OPG. Determine and assist with the communication of the impact of changes in income tax legislation to the business; 
  • Develop and maintain relationships and contacts within the external tax community to be aware of new and up-to-date tax information and 
  • Provide mentoring, and support to the tax staff.

 

EDUCATION

  • University Degree with Finance, Accounting or equivalent; 
  • CPA, CA /CMA / CGA designation with levels I and II of the tax in-depth course completed is required; and
  • Level III in-depth tax course or (M.Tax) Master of Tax degree is preferred, but not mandatory.   

 

QUALIFICATIONS

We are seeking a dynamic tax professional with the following:

  • At least 7-10 years of progressive experience in audit and tax;
  • Minimum 5 years experience working in the tax department of a large organization and or experience working for a public accounting firm in the tax practice at a senior level; 
  • Minimum 2 years experience in a people manager position; 
  • Requires advanced knowledge of tax and accounting concepts, applying and researching Canadian tax legislation, regulations, principles and practices; 
  • Requires experience in tax provisions and tax compliance including preparation and review of corporate tax returns; 
  • US tax knowledge and experience is an asset;
  • Ability to convey complex concepts in an audience appropriate manner; 
  • Sound critical thinking and creative problem solving abilities; 
  • Sense of urgency and decision making skills conducive to managing priorities and meeting internal and external timelines;
  • A results-oriented focus is essential, as is the ability to work in a fast-paced changing environment and effectively manage several projects simultaneously;
  • Strong interpersonal skills, experience in maintaining productive relationships;   
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; ability to influence and communicate effectively across the company and externally at all levels;
  • Quick learner, ability to navigate organization and support systems to deliver results; 
  • Experience and exposure from working in/for highly regulated industries such as utilities, energy, power, mining, oil, gas, manufacturing, telecommunications or financial services is preferred.
