JOB OVERVIEW
Ontario Power Generation (OPG) is looking for a dynamic, strategic and results-driven professional to join our team in the role of Senior Engineer / Scientist – Specialist.
Reporting to the Manager of Performance & Testing, this position is responsible to develop solutions to technically complex problems in support of Ontario Power Generation (OPG) power plant operations, maintenance, refurbishment, design, or construction.
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES
- Review vendor reports, designs, and memos from a specialist perspective in fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, and thermal hydraulics, and document findings in presentations, memos, and reports.
- Conduct simulations, field work, tests, and analyses to support thermal performance investigations, advise clients, and recommend solutions, including obtaining and analyzing relevant information as needed.
- Provide expert engineering design, assessment, technical advice, and consultation to clients on complex problems and projects; establish and utilize industry contacts and resources for problem-solving.
- Lead projects or studies within the discipline, including developing work plans, coordinating resources, directing junior staff or technicians, and ensuring work is completed within budget and schedule constraints.
- Produce reports, presentations, and documentation to communicate results of studies and field tests; evaluate and secure services and products from external firms as required.
- Under supervisor guidance, interact with government authorities, regulatory bodies, and internal/external committees as a technical expert to represent and advance OPG’s interests.
- Ensure all work complies with legislated, corporate, and departmental safety requirements, contribute to safety program development and administration, and provide input to budgets and financial evaluations.
- Stay current with technical developments in the field through technical publications and engagement with research, industry, and educational organizations.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Candidate must possess a four-year Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering.
- Candidate must be a fully licensed engineer in the province of Ontario, or be eligible to be licensed in the Province of Ontario
- Experience in theory and practical application of thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, heat transfer, numerical simulations, and experimental methods to support subject matter expert reviews, field testing, and numerical simulations of power cycles is desired. This experience is normally acquired by a minimum of an accredited degree in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline, and 6-8 years of post-university applied experience.
- This position requires both theoretical and practical expertise in computational fluid dynamics (CFD), heat transfer, and numerical simulations/coding to support analyses in the power industry. The role involves advanced use of commercial CFD codes and grid generation software—particularly, but not limited to, FLUENT/CFX. This advanced CFD knowledge is normally acquired through a minimum of 6 years of post-graduate working experience.
- Must have a minimum of 6 years of progressive relevant experience working with large scale power plants, industrial production or chemical process facilities.
- This position requires experience in implementing standards, methods, procedures, jurisdictional and industrial codes, and in setting work program objectives. Experience working with internal stakeholders, manufacturers, suppliers, and Government or Regulatory Agencies is also considered an asset.
- The position requires the ability to work effectively and efficiently in a flexible hybrid office environment, as well as in-depth experience related to the development, engineering, design, construction, commissioning, and operation of large-scale power plants, industrial production, or chemical process facilities.
- This position requires experience in providing advice and direction in specialized technical fields, as well as familiarity with divisional organization, methods, and practices. Experience working with internal stakeholders, manufacturers, suppliers, and Government or Regulatory Agencies is also required.

The base salary range considers many factors including, but not limited to experience, education, and training, including any collective agreement requirements for union represented positions. It is not typical for the salary to be offered near the top of the range, and salary is dependent on numerous factors. For management roles, the base salary range does not represent the total compensation package. The total compensation package for regular full-time management roles includes pay-for-performance programs for annual and medium time periods.
