Ontario Power Generation (OPG) is looking for a dynamic, analytical and results driven individual to join our Energy Markets team as a Renewable Energy Engineer / Analyst based in downtown Toronto.


Reporting to the Hydroelectric Optimization Supervisor, the Renewable Energy Engineer / Analyst will be OPG’s go-to expert for all things hydroelectric related in the Ontario energy market. Responsibilities will include optimizing the commercial value of OPG's hydroelectric resources in the market, short and long-term hydroelectric generation forecasting to be used for budgeting, business planning and long-term generation planning, and performing strategic analysis in support of negotiations with other market participants, regulators, and policy makers.

  • Prepare monthly and Business Plan hydroelectric energy forecasts, in collaboration with regional Operations staff, for incorporation into the Generation and Planning corporate forecasts.
  • Manage OPG’s water-related Variance Accounts as set forth by the OEB. Perform monthly forecast updates, Business Planning activities, strategic analysis, and act as the subject matter expert for discussions and evidence preparation with the OEB.
  • Assist in planning the optimal use of OPG's hydroelectric generation facilities. This includes identifying the optimal times to use the energy-limited hydroelectric energy, developing short and long-term resource optimization plans for use in outage management, SBG management, uncompensated spill mitigation, etc.
  • Provide market based expertise and analysis in support of adhoc requests from regional Operations staff/Senior Management, which may have a commercial impact for OPG.
  • Perform after-the-fact analysis of OPG's hydroelectric activities in the IESO.
  • Establish and maintain effective relationships within Commercial Operations, regional Operations staff, and other OPG Electricity Sales & Trading stakeholders to achieve optimal safety, financial and operational results




  • Candidate’s that are fully licensed engineer in the province of Ontario, or be eligible to be licensed in the Province of Ontario will be an asset
  • 4-year university degree in Engineering, or a Master’s Degree in Business Administration.




  • Ability to work effectively and efficiently in a flexible hybrid office environment.
  • Minimum 3+ years of experience with power system operations and planning;
  • Requires experience with the operation of the integrated Bulk Electricity System (BES) in addition to fundamental impacts on market price and volatility and a good understanding of physical and financial energy markets;
  • Familiarity with hydroelectric generation, including: understanding of river and reservoir operations, various pricing and financial mechanisms and strategies for resource optimization;
  • Requires experience in a commercial environment, including: intelligence gathering, negotiation activities and interaction with various stakeholders/regulators;
  • Proficient computer programming skills and experience with computer applications/software to facilitate business operations. Experience in modelling, forecasting, sensitivity analysis and data analytics would be considered an asset;
  • Highly motivated, detail oriented and analytical individual;
  • Strong communication skills (oral and written);
  • Strong interpersonal skills, the ability to develop relationships and work with internal stakeholders in various functions and at all levels;
  • Demonstrated problem solving, time management, and negotiation skills;
  • Experience and willingness to work with high performing individuals as part of a diverse team where goals and targets are team based targets vs. individual targets.
