JOB OVERVIEW
Ontario Power Generation (OPG) is looking for a dynamic, strategic and results-driven professional to join our team in the role of Market Analyst Forecasting Specialist.
Reporting to the Senior Manager, Day Ahead Operations, this position is responsible to assist in preparing load and weather (incl. wind/solar) forecasts, conduct analysis of related data and provide written and verbal commentaries to Operations.
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES
- Prepare daily forecasts of short-term electricity demand in the electricity markets/control areas/zones in which OPG does business in. Regularly brief OPG staff on forecasts.
- Assist in maintaining and adapting proprietary short-term demand forecasting applications.
- Evaluate short-term electricity demand forecasts prepared by the Independent System Operators (ISOs) in the electricity markets/control areas/zones in which OPG does business in, and identify potential discrepancies relative to proprietary short-term demand forecasts.
- Assist in appraising publicly and commercially available weather model predictions and providing short-term forecasts and assessments of potential weather impacts on OPG operations, specifically from but not exclusive to:
- Wind generation in the electricity markets/control areas/zones in which OPG does business in;
- Solar generation in the electricity markets/control areas/zones in which OPG does business in;
- Algae and debris run risks for nuclear and/or thermal generation
- Extreme weather in the electricity markets/control areas/zones in which OPG does business in;
- Anomalous precipitation risks for hydroelectric generation
- Conduct analysis of short-term electricity demand drivers and provide assessments of weather-based demand response in the electricity markets/control areas/zones in which OPG does business in.
- Provide information, as required, to support operational decision making
- Remain current with the methods used for short term electricity demand and weather forecasting; provide recommendations to management on their potential for adding value to OPG operations.
- Participate in research studies or electricity sector working groups on forecasting of electricity demand and weather and provide technical guidance, as required.
- Assist with specialized technical assignments, as required.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s Degree (Meteorology, Atmospheric Physics, Econometrics, Economics, Math, Physics, Engineering or an equivalent field)
- 6 years experience minimum in a similar role
- Ability to work in effectively and efficiently in a flexible hybrid office environment.
- Requires experience or knowledge of the electric utility business, to be familiar with the inherent factors and problems influencing energy use, production, and transmission.
- Requires experience or knowledge to be familiar with the evolving electricity marketplace in Ontario and neighboring power systems, as well as the interrelationship of groups in the Business Unit and OPG as a whole.
- Requires experience in consulting with management, preparing various forecasts and undertaking studies related to economic or energy market issues.
- Requires experience in the collection of data and the development and maintenance of databases for use as the primary information source for market analysis, forecasting, risk analysis and alternative scenarios.
- Requires experience with or knowledge of econometric/statistical models. Experience in interpretation of weather prediction models, analysis of short-term electricity demand drivers and weather-based demand response in power markets, econometric modeling, etc.
- Experience with MetrixND/ MetrixIDR is considered an asset

This position will be temporarily based in Toronto, ON until the move to Headquarters in the Summer of 2025.
