Ontario Power Generation (OPG) is looking for a results driven, analytical leader to join our team in the role of Manager, External Reporting and Accounting Policy, for our Downtown Toronto location.

Reporting to the Senior Manager, the Manager, External Reporting and Accounting Policy will ensure compliance with accounting standards and is responsible for the support and review of financial reporting and disclosure requirements for annual and quarterly filings as set out by securities commissions or contractual requirements. This role involves a high profile of interaction with senior management and various stakeholders across the organization.

The successful candidate must bring strong process and reporting improvement skills.

Through a collaborative relationship with the Senior Manager, External Reporting and Accounting Policy, and the External Reporting team, the successful candidate will provide the following:

  • Prepare annual and quarterly financial statements, MD&A, News Release, AIF and other information used for external reporting purposes. This includes information submitted to the Audit and Risk Committee and the Board of Directors and information filed with external bodies such as the Ontario Securities Commission;
  • Review and comment on OPG’s (and subsidiary) annual and quarterly financial statements and notes, which have been prepared for external reporting purposes;
  • Review accounting developments and related external analysis; and review and finalize internal analysis and comment letters on exposure drafts;
  • Review corporate accounting and financial policies and processes that comply with external reporting requirements and Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (“GAAP”);
  • Work closely with the Company’s external auditor to resolve non-routine and complex accounting and finance related issues;
  • Support accounting implementation projects.  Evaluate the accounting implications of strategic proposals including sensitive decisions and their impact on financial results and various financial metrics; and
  • Prepare reporting to the Audit and Risk Committee on updates on a quarterly basis.



  • University degree with emphasis on Business Administration, Finance, or Accounting;  and
  • Professional Accounting Designation (CPA, CA) is required.



We are seeking a dynamical accounting professional with the following:

  • Minimum 4 - 6 years of accounting, external reporting, external audit experience is required,  experience gained in a public company or regulated environment is preferred;
  • Aptitude for Leadership, management experience; where effectively led, influenced and motivated a team of accounting / external reporting resources and/or department would be an asset;
  • Experience in preparing and / or reviewing external financial reports (MD&A and financial statements), and conducting technical accounting analysis;
  • In-depth knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles (“GAAP”), Experience with IFRS and US GAAP, identifying key issues and assessing alternative solutions;
  • Experience in preparing and reviewing audited financial statements, researching and analyzing complex accounting issues and exposure to various internal control environments;
  • Requires advanced knowledge of theories of financial and accounting concepts, policies, principals and practices;
  • Sense of urgency and decision making skills conducive to managing priorities and meeting internal and external timelines;
  • A results-oriented focus is essential, as is the ability to work in a fast-paced changing environment and effectively manage several projects simultaneously;
  • Strong interpersonal skills, experience in maintaining productive relationships;   
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; ability to influence and communicate effectively across the company and externally at all levels;
  • Commitment to high standards of regulatory compliance;
  • Ability to navigate organization and support systems to deliver results; 
  • Ability to work in a cross-functional environment;
  • A strong drive and a high level of energy, commitment and enthusiasm to take on complex and challenging situations in a dynamic organization;
  • Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint and Outlook), including advanced knowledge and experience working with MS Excel required.  Comfortable with functions of; Pivot Tables, VLOOKUP, and Macros;
  • Experience in using IBM Cognos Disclosure Management would be an asset;
  • Experience using large financial and integrated enterprise systems such as SAP would be an asset;
  • Previous experience working for a large to mid-size accounting firm is preferred; and
  • Experience and exposure from working in/for highly regulated industries such as utilities, energy, power, mining, telecommunications, financial services or public sector is preferred.
