JOB OVERVIEW 

Ontario Power Generation (OPG) is recruiting for dynamic, strategic and results oriented professionals to join our team.  

 

Reporting to the Production Supervisor, we’re recruiting for Civil, Electrical and Mechanical Engineers to support Renewable Generation plants across Ontario.  In these roles you will provide technical expertise in modifications and construction, and electrical electrical/protection & control engineering for hydroelectric generating stations located across at specific regions across Ontario.  You will also conduct periodic condition assessment of assets and provide recommendations for their continued safe, reliable and sustainable operation.  

 

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES  

  • Plan, coordinate and conduct engineering assessments, studies, inspections, investigations, designs, and evaluations
  • Preparation of drawings, technical specifications, assessment reports and scope of work documents related to various projects
  • Perform the role of OPG Owner’s Engineer, recognize technical deficiencies, recommend remedial measures, review and approve engineering documents to the best of OPG’s interest and compliance with applicable codes and standards.
  • Respond to emergencies, structural / mechanical or electrical failures or unsatisfactory performance, conduct field investigations, prepare technical reports and recommend actions.
  • Assist in review and preparation of proposals related to design.

 

Civil/Structural Engineers: Design and assess hydroelectric structures (dams, powerhouses, buildings, earthworks); perform geotechnical evaluations and inspections

 

Electrical/P&C Engineers: Assess electrical infrastructure (generators, transformers, control systems); advise on electrical engineering issues, including Arc Flash and grounding; use tools like SCADA, AutoCAD, and power system software

 

Mechanical Engineers: Evaluate turbine generators, flow control, lifting equipment, and auxiliary systems; support commissioning and operation of plant systems (HVAC, fire protection, drainage, etc.)

QUALIFICATIONS

  • 4 year Bachelor’s in Engineering (Electrical, Mechanical, Civil, Geotechnical, or Structural). Candidate must be a fully licensed engineer in the province of Ontario, or be eligible to be licensed in the Province of Ontario.
  • 2–8 years’ experience in engineering (hydro/utilities preferred)
  • Experience with planning and conducting assessments, studies, inspections, investigations, designing, evaluating, construction monitoring & maintenance
  • Experience participating in and leading root cause analysis for equipment issues; Field Engineer experience is an asset.
  • Experience and knowledge of major applicable design codes and standards

 

 

Civil/Structural Engineers: Experience in the analysis and design of Steel and Concrete Structures, or geotechnical investigations and design preferred

 

Electrical/ P&C Engineers: The ideal candidate will have demonstrated knowledge and experience with AC & DC systems, communication, generator, and protection / control systems, grounding, instrumentation, LV & MV systems & switchgear, oil containment, PLC's, transformers, teleprotections, and regulatory requirements; Software associated with electrical engineering, monitoring and instrumentation, Power System Software, SCADA, Data Historians MS Suite of software & AutoCAD; Experience in analysis in electrical testing & results

 

Mechanical Engineers: Experience conducting assessments, testing, studies, inspections, investigations, design, evaluations, construction monitoring & maintenance of mechanical works associated with Hydroelectric Turbines, Balance of Plant systems (hoists, cranes, oil handling systems, piping, etc.), governor/HPU systems, water conveyance systems; Experience working in an industrial environment with rotating machinery, materials, welding, regulated pressure boundary and field trades support;  Experience using AutoCAD is an asset.

 

In addition, the candidate should have: Strong planning and budgeting skills; ability to collaborate with stakeholders and team members; knowledge of OH&S regulations; Valid Class G Ontario driving license (25% travel); coaching and leadership experience.

The base salary range considers many factors including, but not limited to experience, education, and training, including any collective agreement requirements for union represented positions. It is not typical for the salary to be offered near the top of the range, and salary is dependent on numerous factors. For management roles, the base salary range does not represent the total compensation package. The total compensation package for regular full-time management roles includes pay-for-performance programs for annual and medium time periods.
