Ontario Power Generation (OPG) is looking for a dynamic, consultative & results driven professional to join our team on a temporary basis in the role of Electrical Engineer, in OPG’s Hydro-Thermal Operations (HTO), Plant Engineering Services (PES), based in Thunder Bay, ON.  


Reporting to the local Plant Technical Support Manager, the Electrical Engineer is the lead engineer that takes full technical responsibility for interpreting, organizing, executing, and coordinating projects that are necessary for the continuous safe, efficient and economical commissioning and operation of hydroelectric and thermal generating station assets.


The Electrical Engineer works within the Plant Engineering Services (PES), which provides engineering technical support to all HTO site across the province in a centre led matrix organization.

  • Plan, coordinate and conduct Electrical engineering assessments, studies, inspections, investigations, designs, and evaluations for generators, power systems transformers, high and medium voltage equipment, station AC & DC service, protection & control associated with hydroelectric and thermal generating stations and associated infrastructure.
  • Preparation of drawings, technical specifications, construction estimates, request for proposals, proposal evaluation, award, contract negotiations & administration & co-ordination, construction monitoring, resolution of contract disputes.
  • Provide technical advice and guidance on a variety of technical matters of hydroelectric and thermal station maintenance operations, performance, design, and commissioning.
  • Provide input to business plans, work plans, budgets with respect to project priorities, schedules and resource requirements.
  • Collaborate with customers, stakeholders, consultants, contractors, and government agencies as required.
  • As a technical expert in electrical engineering provide advice, guidance, consultation and services to engineering problems including:
    • Electrical/P&C engineering matters related to projects;
    • Arc flash and grounding assessments
  • Respond to emergencies, equipment failure, unsatisfactory equipment performance, conduct field investigations, prepare reports, and recommend actions.
  • Develop plans, standards and technical procedures for inspection, maintenance and monitoring programs.
  • Serve on study, project teams or task groups.
  • Pre-start health and safety reviews, investigation of safety or technical incidents.



  • 4 year university degree in Electrical Engineering
  • Unrestricted P. Eng. certification in good standing in the Province of Ontario is required.



We are looking for an engineering professional with the following:

  • Minimum 5 years of experience as an Electrical Engineer;
  • Experience working in an industrial environment with distributed control systems, medium and high voltage installations, protection and control schemes, and large electric motors and generators (asset);
  • Experience working in a  Generating Facility, industrial power system or utilities organization is preferred;
  • Experience conducting assessments, testing, studies, inspections, investigations, designing, evaluating, construction monitoring & maintenance of electrical works associated with generating stations;
  • Software associated with electrical engineering, field survey, monitoring and instrumentation;
  • Reporting preparation, and strong communication and interpersonal skills; ability to work with people;
  • A results oriented, efficient & value oriented focus, excellent verbal and written communicator, with high integrity to uphold company values including H&S, and protection of the environment;
  • Experience using AutoCAD is preferred;
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the OH&S Act and Regulations, especially for Industrial Establishments (Ont. Reg. 851) & Construction (Ont. Reg. 213) in Ontario & the Ontario Electrical Safety Code & various codes and standards associated with electrical engineering and application of their requirements;
  • Valid Ontario Drivers License in good standing;
  • Willingness to travel via road, airplane, float plane, helicopter etc. 25% of time;
