JOB OVERVIEW
Ontario Power Generation (OPG) is looking for a dynamic, strategic and results-driven professional to join our team in the role of Assistant Project Leader.
Reporting to the Project Leader, the Assistant Project Leader is responsible for supporting a portfolio of multidisciplinary projects in support of the operation and sustainment of OPG renewable generation stations. This role is accountable for coordinating matrix project execution teams and project documentation throughout the project lifecycle.
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES
- Assist in organizing, coordinating, and controlling assigned projects/packages in accordance with Project Management governance from development/approval through safe execution and final acceptance.
- Support development of project background information, scope and constructability reviews, and business case submissions for approvals and funding release, including evaluation of alternatives for planning.
- Help initiate and coordinate estimates, schedules, execution plans, and contract performance specifications; establish structures to estimate, manage, and control project funds.
- Gather and integrate stakeholder/regulatory requirements into estimates and execution plans; coordinate design/spec clarifications and required changes; ensure proper processes for labour requirements and unionized resource planning.
- Coordinate and lead meetings with designers, suppliers, construction, and operations pre- and post-award; maintain liaison with field construction and operations on design, schedule, cost, and related issues.
- Monitor and report on scope, quality, cost, and schedule; manage change; review variances with explanations/recommendations and implement corrective actions; assess risk and develop mitigation plans per corporate policies.
- Understand and apply Contractor Management governance, acting in support of the Contract Administrator role; oversee construction contracts, review/approve contractor submissions (schedules, methods, quality procedures), and verify safe readiness and compliance.
- Maintain effective communication with internal/external stakeholders and agencies; chair stakeholder meetings; coordinate turnover documentation, track/close deficiencies; conduct site/manufacturer/supplier visits as needed; stay current on corporate procedures, best practices, and technology, and liaise with plant/outage/work-control teams.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Requires a 4-year university degree in a relevant field (engineering preferred) with knowledge/experience in an industrial/technical/engineering environment; or a combination of post-secondary education, PM training/courses, and equivalent experience.
- Requires a knowledge of project management principles, specifically the 5 primary project phases (Identification, Initiation, Definition, Execution, Closeout).
- 2–4 years of project management experience supporting requirements/plans, developing cost estimates, participating in tendering/award, supporting execution-phase project/contract delivery, and closeout.
- Demonstrated ability to balance competing priorities across scope, schedule, cost, quality, and change.
- Sound knowledge of equipment and processes in hydroelectric generating stations or similar heavy industry; understanding of construction methods, codes/standards, and QA/QC.
- Experience with cost accounting, forecasting, and project cost control.
- Experience in applying commercial contracting methods, contract management/administration, and construction health & safety practices.
- Strong problem-solving, communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills; effective team player able to coordinate internal/external stakeholders, including environmental protection considerations.
