OPG is looking for a dedicated, results driven and dynamic professional to join our Safety Related Computers team in the role of Senior Software Designer located in Pickering, Ontario.


The Senior Software Designer will be part of the team that supports Nuclear design activities for computer hardware and software systems (including maintenance and troubleshooting). This is an exciting opportunity to work in an environment where you will contribute to Ontario Power Generation’s continued growth and success in generating safe, clean, reliable low-cost power in a sustainable manner.



  • Computer hardware development and maintenance of computer systems containing Category I/II/III software
  • Preparation of computer hardware design requirements and associated documentation in accordance with Engineering Change Control (ECC)
  • Circuit design, analog and digital including troubleshooting of computer hardware at module-level and circuit-level
  • Computer system timing analysis and the verification of computer system performance requirements
  • Computer hardware design, development, testing, maintenance, and troubleshooting, in real time computer systems or embedded systems
  • Application of cyber security best practices, digital incident management, and incident recovery procedure development and execution
  • Provide SQA support to OPG projects that includes:
    • Preparation of computer system and software design requirements
    • Software development such as code implementation
    • Perform independent verification and validation (V&V) activities that includes software testing
    • Preparation of software qualification assessment reports for pre-developed software used in real-time computer applications.
    • Review of vendor SQA documents for acceptance
  • Software troubleshooting of Category I/II/III software and corrective changes
  • Maintain common set of real-time software related policies, standards, procedures and guidelines for the nuclear governing document framework (N-PROG-MP-0006)
  • Provide guidance in the areas of software quality management and assurance
  • Conduct  software quality assurance monitoring, surveillances and assessments
  • Carry out qualifications of real-time computer software commercial products
  • Assist projects in establishing software quality management, software quality assurance and software engineering processes
  • Maintain awareness of current software engineering tools and methodologies and provide ongoing recommendations to maintain an optimized and effective software development and maintenance process



  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, or Mechatronics Engineering (or equivalent education)



  • Ability to analyze and understand technical information and quickly acquire new technical knowledge
  • Nuclear experience is considered an asset
  • Experience and ability as a team player to understand and manage the interrelationships of various internal and external groups in order to facilitate objectives and ensure projects satisfy stakeholder requirements;
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Have a strong interest in fast-paced, challenging work environments where showing initiative and self motivation are assets
  • Proven track record on delivering results
  • Strong in understanding, executing and following governance and procedures with a questioning and analytical attitude/approach under minimum required supervision
