This position is moving to OPG Corporate Headquarters: In Summer 2025, OPG will officially welcome employees to our new Corporate Headquarters located at 1908 Colonel Sam Drive, Oshawa, Ontario. This new space will enable teamwork, collaboration and innovation that will help us to achieve our mission to electrify life in one generation. This position will be temporarily based in Pickering, ON until the move to Headquarters in the Summer of 2025.

 

JOB OVERVIEW

Ontario Power Generation (OPG) is looking for a dynamic, strategic and results-driven professional to join our team on a Permanent Full Time Basis, in the role of Senior Plant Engineer/ Officer located in Oshawa, Ontario.

 

Reporting to the Manager of Engineering (Equipment Reliability - Renewable Generation), the Senior Plant Engineer/ Officer will provide technical support for the safe, efficient and economical commissioning and operation of hydroelectric and thermal generating station assets.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES 

  • Provide technical advice and guidance on a variety of mechanical and or electrical issues to ensure safe, environmentally responsible, reliable and efficient power generation. This includes but is not limited to: all manner of maintenance activities and plans, operating concerns and limitations, equipment health and performance, design deficiencies and enhancements, and project related activities. 
  • Provide support, coaching and mentoring to junior staff. 
  • Provide input and support with maintaining and updating work programs, procedures, and standards related to equipment reliability. 
  • Develop or assist with work methods, preparation of reports, and record keeping 
  • Assist in allocating work, providing instruction and reviewing reports/results for technical soundness and quality of presentation. 
  •  Lead or collaborate in studies or investigations involving both internal and external stakeholders 
  • Influence and seek consensus with stakeholders holding diverse viewpoints and objectives. 
  • Provide leadership in collaborating closely with engineering, operations, maintenance and corporate stakeholders to build and improve reliability tools and products, and the adoption of their use. 
  • Undertake or oversee root cause investigations for equipment related failures or unsatisfactory equipment performance. Provide corrective action plans that address all stakeholder concerns and requirements. 
  • Keep abreast of advances in hydroelectric plant design development in general and the assigned technical field in particular.  
  • Participate in training programs. 
  • Ensure equipment surveillance programs are developed and are executed by station engineering and operations. Ensure equipment and system performance criteria is well documented as well as action plans for abnormal conditions. 
  • Ensure adherence to all Section and other OPG governing documents. 
  • Ensure adherence to all regulations related to safety, environment or other legal requirements 
  • Requirement to travel via road, airplane, float plane, helicopter etc. on short notice up to 10% of time (though actual amount of travel is normally minimal in nature). 

 

EDUCATION

  • Candidate must be a fully licensed engineer in the province of Ontario, or be eligible to be licensed in the Province of Ontario
  • 4 year university degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering  
  • Valid Ontario Driver’s License in good standing

 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Ability to work effectively and efficiently in a flexible hybrid office environment.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience as an Engineer is preferred  
  • Experience generating reports and analyzing trends using Power Bi  
  • The successful candidate will be results oriented and have a strong focus on the company core values of integrity and personal accountability. 
  • Experience working with cross functional teams 
  • Experience in a Hydro/Thermal plant is preferred

The base salary range considers many factors including, but not limited to experience, education, and training, including any collective agreement requirements for union represented positions. It is not typical for the salary to be offered near the top of the range, and salary is dependent on numerous factors. For management roles, the base salary range does not represent the total compensation package. The total compensation package for regular full-time management roles includes pay-for-performance programs for annual and medium time periods. Maintaining a high-performance culture and excellence is a core expectation of every member of our leadership team and is rewarded through the established compensation framework.
