JOB OVERVIEW   

Ontario Power Generation (OPG) is looking for dynamic, strategic and results-driven professionals to join our team in the role of Nuclear Operator in Training.   

  

This position is a training program to become a Nuclear Operator. Training can take up to 18 months to complete depending on the assigned stream.  

  

Nuclear Operators are responsible for keeping the nuclear generating station safe under normal and abnormal conditions. They make rounds of their designated areas within the plant to check and maintain the operating status of equipment, complete routines and regular inspections and perform tests on equipment  

   

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES    

  • Checking the status of equipment and systems to detect/assess problems and provide information to maintenance to assist in repairing equipment   

  • Adhere to safety procedures to proactively prevent workplace accidents and immediately isolate and contain any problems that may arise    

  • Document and record routine maintenance activities   

  • Assist with testing functionality of equipment  

  • Respond to abnormal station conditions per station governance  

  • Perform field operations and activities in accordance with approved procedures, under the supervision of a Supervising Nuclear Operator.   

  • Involvement with commissioning, start-up, running and shutdown of various nuclear station systems.    

  • Working safely with various types of equipment.  

  

  

QUALIFICATIONS   

You must meet at least one of the following education requirements:    

  1. Secondary School Diploma that includes Grade 12-U (university) preparation courses in mathematics and in physics and/or chemistry;    

  1. Secondary School Diploma plus a College Power Engineering Diploma (1, 2 or 3 year program)   

  1. Secondary School Diploma plus a four year University Engineering Degree in a relevant discipline   

  1. Secondary School Diploma plus a two or three year College Technician/Technologist Diploma in a program below (or the equivalent):    

  • Chemical Engineering   

  • Civil Engineering   

  • Electrical Engineering   

  • Electro-Mechanical Engineering   

  • Electronics   

  • Environmental Engineering   

  • Mechanical Engineering   

  • Stationary Engineering   

  • A minimum of 70% cumulative GPA in your qualifying program above is required. In order to be considered, you must upload this supporting transcript to your application and will be asked for an official copy of this transcript should you be selected for an interview. If applicable, you must have Canadian equivalency of foreign education also attached to your application.  
  • Possess good communication skills (both verbal and written), consistent with Grade 12 English requirements   

  •  Eligible to work in Canada  

  • Read, understand and execute detailed written procedures with precision

 

This role is physically and operationally demanding and is performed primarily in a nuclear generating environment. The successful candidate must be able to:  

  • Perform work while wearing required personal protective equipment (PPE) and radiation protective equipment (RPE) for extended periods.  

  • Climb ladders and scaffolding; work at heights; and access confined or restricted spaces.  

  • Stand, walk, bend, crouch, and climb for prolonged periods during a shift.  

  • Safely perform field operations in radiological and/or tritium‑controlled environments, in accordance with prescribed safety procedures.  

  • Respond to abnormal and emergency plant conditions, which may require physical stamina, use of tools, and rapid movement throughout the station.  

  • Work indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions. 

These requirements are essential to safely perform the duties of a Nuclear Operator.
