This position is moving to OPG Corporate Headquarters: In Summer 2025, OPG will officially welcome employees to our new Corporate Headquarters located at 1908 Colonel Sam Drive, Oshawa, Ontario. This position will be temporarily based in enter Toronto OR Pickering, ON until the move to Headquarters in the Summer of 2025.

 

JOB OVERVIEW  

 

Ontario Power Generation (OPG) is looking for dynamic, strategic, and results-driven professional to join our team in the role of Director, Software Engineering.  

 

Reporting to the VP, Information Technology, the Director, Software Engineering is primary responsibility is to oversee all IT applications and related activities. This individual’s principal goals are to develop and manage application portfolios for each department and to attain all IT service level agreements for the user community within the organization.

 

The Director, Software Engineering role is to supervise and maintain the organization’s repository of software applications through best practices and the appropriate staffing and management of a technical team. Providing overall direction by analyzing business objectives and customer needs; developing, communicating, building support for, and implementing business strategies, plans, and practices; analyzing costs and forecasts and incorporating them into business plans; determining and supporting resource requirements; evaluating operational processes; measuring outcomes to ensure desired results; identifying and capitalizing on improvement opportunities; promoting a customer environment; and demonstrating adaptability and sponsoring continuous learning.

 

The Director, Software Engineering will plan, coordinate, direct, and design all operational activities of the application department, as well as provide direction and support for IT solutions that enhance mission-critical business operations. The Director of Application Services will work closely with decision makers in other departments to identify, recommend, develop, implement, and support cost-effective technology solutions for all aspects of the organization.

 

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

 

  • Ensure that applications continue to meet business requirements and systems goals, fulfill end-user requirements, and identify and resolve systems issues.
  • Review and analyze existing applications effectiveness and efficiency, and then develop strategies for improving or leveraging these systems.
  • Work within and across agile teams to design, develop, test, implement, and support technical solutions across a full-stack of industry leading development tools and technologies
  • Research and make recommendations on software products and services in support of procurement and development efforts.
  • Evaluate new applications, systems software, products, and/or enhancements to existing applications throughout the enterprise.
  • Collaborate with analysts, designers, and system owners in the testing of new software programs and applications.
  • Ensure documentation and technical specifications of all applications are developed and maintained.
  • Ensure that any new software integration into company systems meets functional requirements, system compliance, and interface specifications.
  • Coordinate feasibility studies for software and system products under consideration for purchase, and give advice based on findings.
  • Contribute to pre-testing phase of development by evaluating proposals to identify potential problem areas and make the appropriate recommendations.
  • Manage and provide direction for the application team in support of business operations.
  • Liaise with company’s software suppliers for prompt rectification of any problems or emergencies.

 

EDUCATION

 

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration, Engineering, Computer Science, or related area from a recognized University with Canadian accreditation.

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS

 

  • Over ten (10) years of progressive IT leadership experience in higher education or similar complex organizations.
  • Minimum of five years of experience in a Microsoft heavy technology environment, including 2-3 years of practical professional experience in project management
  • Experience with configuration management and infrastructure automation tools
  • Experience with Cloud computing platforms (AWS, Azure or GCP)
  • Experience leading horizontal DevOps/Developer tooling teams
  • Experience leading at least one full enterprise ERP upgrade
  • Experienced with designing, implementing and maintaining SharePoint environments
  • Fundamental understanding of web-based systems programming and development
  • Demonstrated experience in leading cross-functional project teams
  • Effective engagement with diverse stakeholders, including leadership, unionized staff, and vendors.
  • Excellent communication skills for conveying technical concepts and strategic alignment.
  • Strategic thinking to align technology initiatives with organizational goals and anticipate future needs.
  • Adaptability to evolving technological landscapes and changing priorities.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, along with demonstrated leadership in team development.
  • Efficient management of IT budgets and resources, with desirable certifications like CISSP, PMP, or ITIL.
