JOB OVERVIEW
Ontario Power Generation (OPG) is looking for a dynamic, strategic and results-driven professional to join our team in the role of Computer Hardware Engineer.
Reporting to the Manager of Engineering, this position is responsible to develop, test, and maintain high-quality control computer systems including the development of replacement components/ controllers in Real-Time Process Computing (RTPC), responding to technical issues in these systems, and ensuring compliance with design governance.
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES
- Designing, maintaining, monitoring, and troubleshooting control computer systems in a nuclear facility
- Hardware Development Tools: Utilize computer component development tools to design, test, and refine control computing system components.
- Real-Time Process Computing (RTPC): Manage, implement, and enhance Real-Time Process Computing (RTPC) systems to ensure reliable and efficient system performance.
- Lab-Based Computing Work: Perform development, testing, and troubleshooting in a computer lab environment, ensuring accurate design and validation of developed solutions.
- Understanding of digital logic, computer architecture, digital electronics, computer buses, and basic operating system concepts
- Preparation and verification of comprehensive design documentation, technical specifications, plans, procedures, user manuals, reports, drawings, guidelines, and other technical documentation for systems involving computers, electrical, and electronic technologies, in accordance with the Engineering Change Control (ECC) process
- Providing Operations / Maintenance / Project stakeholders with specialized in-depth expertise in the areas of site control computer hardware, computer development systems , and site computing labs.
- Conducting technical discussions, meetings, and collaboration efforts with stakeholders in relation to electrical, electronics, and computing systems
- Attend meetings, conferences, and training involving electrical, electronics, Cyber security, computing hardware, and computing software systems
- Leading technical teams to drive engineering processes required to implement modifications at a nuclear facility
- Maintaining and upgrading site computer labs and computing hardware support tools and test jigs.
- Assessing internal and external business challenges, regulatory issues and OPEX concerning computing hardware; Recommend process and design improvements.
- Reverse-engineer legacy computing hardware to develop design-basis documents and component/device requirements
- Performing electromagnetic susceptibility and immunity analysis of control computer related equipment.
QUALIFICATIONS
- 4 Year Bachelors Degree in Computer Engineering, Software Engineering or Electrical Engineering
- 2-8 Years of relevant engineering experience
- Detailed experience with computer system communication/data buses (ex: UART, ETHERNET, I2C, SPI, PCI/PCIE, ISA, etc.)
- Hands-on experience working in lab environments with test equipment such as logic analyzers/oscilloscopes/function generators/multimeters to design, test, and troubleshoot digital computer/embedded systems.
- Some experience designing PCBs with schematic capture and PCB layout software (ex: OrCAD, Altium, KiCAD, etc.).
- Thorough background in computer hardware component design and integration.
- Demonstrated ability to develop and execute test plans for complex computer control boards.
- Proficiency in preparing technical requirements and documentation such as requirement documents, technical specifications, and design change packages.
- Additional Desired Qualifications include the following:
- Proficiency in layer 1, 2, and 3 networking protocols (Ethernet, IP, and TCP/UDP) and troubleshooting these using a TAP/SPAN Port with Wireshark.
- Some experience with RTOS UNIX based systems (ex: QNX, RTLinux, etc.) and terminal command-line interfacing with these would be desired.
- Some experience with Varian Data Machines minicomputers (specifically V72 series) would be highly desirable.
- Familiarity with IPC, DO-254/N290.14:15, and IEC61000-4 series of standards is an asset.
- Candidate must be a fully licensed engineer in the province of Ontario, or be eligible to be licensed in the Province of Ontario

The base salary range considers many factors including, but not limited to experience, education, and training, including any collective agreement requirements for union represented positions. It is not typical for the salary to be offered near the top of the range, and salary is dependent on numerous factors. For management roles, the base salary range does not represent the total compensation package. The total compensation package for regular full-time management roles includes pay-for-performance programs for annual and medium time periods.
