JOB OVERVIEW 
Ontario Power Generation (OPG) is looking for a dynamic, strategic and results-driven professional to join our team in the role of New Graduate Opportunity – Labour Relations Consultant

 

Reporting to the Senior Manager,Labour Relations, this position is responsible for provididing expert guidance and support on labour relations matters, including interpreting collective agreements, managing grievances, and preparing cases for mediation, arbitration, and bargaining. Additionally, the position involves developing negotiation strategies, delivering training, and fostering effective relationships with union representatives to ensure alignment with corporate policies and practices.

 

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • Partner with HR Business Partners, Line Managers, and Senior Leadership providing advice on collective agreements and staff relations matters.  Provide interpretation and explanation as to the clauses associated with OPG union collective agreements (e.g., PWU, Society, EPSCA);
  • Support efficient and effective processing of grievances involving represented staff and by provide interpretation, advice and guidance on agreements, policies, and procedures ensuring that various provisions of the Redress Procedure are properly carried out;
  • Assist and act as managements advisor by providing and presenting management briefs, rebuttal material and supporting data as required to support OPG’s management position;
  • Assist HR Business Partner and Line Management, in preparing cases for grievance meetings and ensuring that all relevant information is included in the grievance briefs and develop Letters of Understanding to facilitate agreement on issues; 
  • Working with Legal Counsel, HR Business Partner’s and Line Management to prepare cases for mediation and arbitration and prepare briefs for presenting cases
  • Assisting in the development of negotiation strategies for collective bargaining and participating on bargaining subcommittees; 
  • Recommending, developing, and delivering labour relations training and specialized seminars, as well as developing training materials; 
  • Maintaining currency with employment law, legislative change, arbitration decisions, trends and developments in collective bargaining and other major events/matters related to labour relations; 
  • Supporting the point of contact with unions by resolving or arranging for the disposition of questions, complaints, or requests for information related to the treatment of union-represented staff;
  • Developing good working relationships with union representatives and communicating with unions to convey information on new or amended corporate policies, practices, and procedures;
  • Representing management on joint union/management subcommittees; 


QUALIFICATIONS

  • University Degree and Master of Industrial Relations is required, these designations are an asset CHRP, CHRL, CHRE
  • Labour Relations and or Human Resources experience, in a unionized environment considered an asset.  
  • Some knowledge of labour relations principles, processes, best practices, theories, trends and related legislation and arbitral jurisprudence in both public and private sectors;
  • Strong interpersonal skills with a demonstrated ability to collaborate with business partners and use superior judgement, business awareness, and political acuity to provide risk-based advice;
  • Experience with grievance administration and collective agreement interpretation;
  • Ability to quickly understand business processes, navigate organization, support systems and influence others
  • Strong case law research experience.  Broad conceptual, diagnostic and analytical skills; ability to reach well grounded, independent conclusions and influence outcomes; 
  • Strong problem solving skills, exceptional project management and organizational skills to work in a fast paced, high volume environment.  Ability to communicate effectively, possess excellent written and verbal, and facilitation skills;
  • Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook) is considered an asset to have experience working with Lotus Notes;
  • Valid Ontario Drivers License in good standing, is necessary for this position;

This position is moving to OPG Corporate Headquarters: In Summer 2025, OPG will officially welcome employees to our new Corporate Headquarters located at 1908 Colonel Sam Drive, Oshawa, Ontario. This position will be temporarily based in Toronto or Pickering, ON until the move to Headquarters in the Summer of 2025.

The base salary range considers many factors including, but not limited to experience, education, and training, including any collective agreement requirements for union represented positions. It is not typical for the salary to be offered near the top of the range, and salary is dependent on numerous factors. For management roles, the base salary range does not represent the total compensation package. The total compensation package for regular full-time management roles includes pay-for-performance programs for annual and medium time periods.
