JOB OVERVIEW
Ontario Power Generation (OPG) is looking for a dynamic, strategic and results-driven professional to join our team in the role of Manager, External Reporting & Accounting Policy.
Reporting to the Senior Manager, External Reporting & Accounting Policy, this position is responsible to lead OPG’s external financial reporting and disclosure, including preparation of quarterly and annual MD&A, news releases, AIF content, and related materials for the Audit & Finance Committee, Board of Directors, and regulators such as the Ontario Securities Commission. This position provides technical accounting leadership by reviewing financial statements and notes, monitoring and interpreting new accounting standards, partnering with external auditors to resolve complex issues, and ensuring GAAP-compliant policies, strong internal controls, and high-quality reporting that supports CEO/CFO certification. The position also advises senior management on the accounting implications of strategic initiatives and mentors finance teams across the organization on reporting and accounting policy.
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES
- Review and provide final-level commentary on quarterly and annual financial statements and note disclosures to support external reporting quality.
- Champion best-in-class external reporting to maintain “top tier” disclosure standards among Canadian peers
- Monitor accounting standard-setting and emerging issues, producing internal position papers and drafting/reviewing comment letters on exposure drafts
- Liaise with standard setters and professional bodies (e.g., CICA, IASB, FASB) to stay ahead of new requirements and proactively assess impacts to OPG
- Maintain and enhance corporate accounting policies, processes, and controls to ensure compliance with GAAP and external reporting requirements
- Partner with external auditors to resolve complex and non-routine accounting matters, ensuring timely, well-supported conclusions
- Advise senior leaders on accounting implications of strategic initiatives (capital investments, rate strategy, pension/OPEB changes), safeguarding confidentiality and corporate interests
- Lead capability-building and oversight within Finance by supervising and mentoring advisors/accountants, delivering training on accounting policy, compliance, and certification-support expectations (CEO/CFO)
QUALIFICATIONS
- Education & designation: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field, with a CPA designation required
- Minimum 5 years of experience
- External reporting expertise: Demonstrated experience preparing/reviewing quarterly and annual external reporting deliverables (e.g., MD&A, financial statements/notes, AIF, news releases) and supporting Board/Audit Committee materials
- Strong technical accounting capability: Advanced knowledge of GAAP/IFRS and proven ability to research, analyze, and document conclusions on complex/non-routine accounting issues and disclosure matters
- Regulatory and governance awareness: Working knowledge of securities/regulatory reporting expectations (e.g., OSC-style filing environment), materiality/disclosure judgment, and internal control considerations supporting CEO/CFO certifications
- Audit and stakeholder management: Proven ability to partner effectively with external auditors and to communicate clearly with senior leadership and cross-functional stakeholders
- Leadership, coaching, and continuous improvement: Experience leading projects, mentoring/training finance professionals on policy/reporting topics, and driving efficient, cost-effective processes while maintaining high standards of confidentiality and compliance
