JOB OVERVIEW

Ontario Power Generation (OPG) is looking for a dynamic, strategic and results-driven professional to join our team in the role of Lead Network Engineer.  

 

Reporting to the Senior Manager IT Services, this position is responsible to own the design, deployment, and high-severity support of complex Cisco and Extreme Networks environments, leading a team to restore services quickly and optimize performance across data centre, campus, and BGP networks.

 

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES 

  • Design, configure, and implement advanced Cisco and Extreme Networks deployments, including secure integrations between environments.
  • Lead high-pressure troubleshooting to diagnose issues, restore services quickly, and optimize network performance and stability.
  • Independently execute complex work and lead a team to complete network design, configuration, and support initiatives to agreed scope and timelines.
  • Own operational tooling and standards (CLI management, templates/centralized deployments, automation/workflows, and NOC integrations) across data centre, campus LAN/WiFi, BGP routing, controllers, and appliances.
  • Support IT infrastructure operations by executing tasks as directed, mentoring junior staff, and following change management and ITIL processes.
  • Evaluate emerging tools and best practices, implementing fit-for-purpose technologies to meet business and infrastructure needs.
  • Drive continuous improvement by simplifying, standardizing, documenting, and automating network designs and operations to reduce cycle times and prevent downtime.
  • Deploy, operate, and optimize hybrid IT/OT networking services by performing hands-on build work (racking/stacking/cabling/configuration), managing and troubleshooting performance, and leveraging virtual networking and cloud/SDN technologies (Azure, IaaS/PaaS/SaaS, ACI, SDN) to support availability, security, risk, and disaster recovery.

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • 4 years of university in an appropriate field such as computer science, information technology or networking and security.
  • Holds professional level certifications in networking such as CCNP or CCIE.
  • Over 6 years of experience in a senior level role in IT networking infrastructure services, demonstrating a solid understanding of various networking technologies and protocols
  • Demonstrated expertise in deploying, troubleshooting and maintaining complex multi-vendor solutions across a large enterprise.
  • Demonstrated expertise leading high-severity incident troubleshooting to restore services quickly and optimize network performance and stability.
  • Proven ability to lead technical delivery (and work independently) on complex network design, configuration, and support initiatives, managing scope, priorities, and timelines.
  • Strong experience with enterprise networking domains and tooling, including data centre and campus LAN/WiFi, BGP routing, controllers/appliances, CLI operations, templating/centralized deployments, and NOC integrations.
  • Working knowledge of ITIL and formal change management practices, with experience mentoring junior staff and supporting day-to-day infrastructure operations.
  • Experience driving continuous improvement through standardization, documentation, and automation/workflows, including exposure to hybrid/cloud and virtual networking technologies (e.g., Azure, IaaS/PaaS/SaaS, ACI, SDN) and associated security/availability considerations.
  • Hands-on ability to perform build and deployment activities in data centre and campus environments, including racking/stacking, cabling, patching, and device turn-up/configuration.
