JOB OVERVIEW 
Ontario Power Generation (OPG) is looking for a dynamic, strategic and results-driven professional to join our team in the role of Data Architect. 

 

Reporting to the Senior Manager, Enterprise Architecture, this position is responsible to translate business requirements into technology requirements, and define data standards and principles, often in support of data or digital transformations. The data architect is responsible for visualizing and designing an organization’s enterprise data management framework, which describes the processes used to plan, specify, enable, create, acquire, use, archive, retrieve, control, and purge data. Additionally, the architect will be responsible for the OPG data standards and governance, utilizing solutions like Azure Synapse Analytics and Azure Data Factory to orchestrate and automate data movement and transformation across platforms such as Hadoop Distributed File System (HDFS), Data Lake and SQL Databases.
 

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES  

  • Champion, negotiate, and express the future state of data architecture at the OPG by developing the Target Data Architecture and identifying candidate architecture roadmap to get there.
  • Define and apply architecture governance to enable the enterprise to develop and implement data solutions and capabilities that are clearly aligned with business drivers.
  • Develop understanding of the business and successfully translate data models/concepts/capabilities in a way the business understands.
  • Act as the SME in data architecture best practices, data architecture design patterns, reference architecture, service-oriented architecture, micro-service architecture, and available off-the-shelf components.
  • Identifies architectural and data risks associated with all aspects of the solution and makes recommendations on strategies to mitigate risks.
  • Ensures data architecture standards and guidelines are maintained through the establishment and maintenance of documentation including best practices, processes, and associated templates.
  • Produces and maintains design artifacts and documentation for decision making process throughout the application development life cycle.
  • Manages users' expectations by providing education to the users and presents architectural concepts to management and technical audiences and facilitates data modeling discussions.

 

QUALIFICATIONS 

  • 4-year University education in computer science, computer/software engineering or other relevant programs within data engineering, data analysis, artificial intelligence, or machine learning.
  • A period of over 6 years and up to and including 8 years in data modeling, data warehouse design, and data solution architecture in a Big Data environment is considered necessary to gain this experience. 
  • Expert knowledge of Microsoft SQL Server (i.e. SQL, SSAS, SSIS, SSRS) and Azure database and analytics services (i.e. Azure SQL, Azure Synapse, Azure Data Factory, Azure Data Lake, Purview, Power Apps, Power BI).
  • Extensive experience in developing, deploying, managing, and supporting real-time mission critical database.
  • Experience in using Enterprise Architecture frameworks and development methodologies (e.g., TOGAF, Zachman, SABSA).
  • Advanced knowledge of database security, backup and recovery, and performance monitoring standards.
  • Experience in migration of database and analytics services to Azure.
  • Strong technical documentation, research, and analytical skills.
  • Solid understanding of product management, agile principles, and development methodologies.

This position is moving to OPG Corporate Headquarters: In Summer 2025, OPG will officially welcome employees to our new Corporate Headquarters located at 1908 Colonel Sam Drive, Oshawa, Ontario. This position will be temporarily based in Toronto, ON until the move to Headquarters in the Summer of 2025.

The base salary range considers many factors including, but not limited to experience, education, and training, including any collective agreement requirements for union represented positions. It is not typical for the salary to be offered near the top of the range, and salary is dependent on numerous factors. For management roles, the base salary range does not represent the total compensation package. The total compensation package for regular full-time management roles includes pay-for-performance programs for annual and medium time periods.
