(OPG) is excited to offer one (1) student opportunity in our Civil Engineering Department in Niagara Falls, Ontario. This is an 8 months student placement commencing in May 2019.

All students applying for student positions at OPG must meet the below eligibility:

  • Enrolled in full-time studies at a post-secondary institution.
  • Have a minimum average of 70% cumulative GPA.
  • Returning to full-time studies in the same program following the completion of the work term OR requiring the work term or co-op placement to graduate.


  • Create and/or update hydrologic and hydraulic model for watersheds and river systems where OPG operates its hydroelectric generating stations.
  • Analyze hydrometric, hydro-meteorological, and topographic/bathymetric data using Geographic Information System (GIS) and other software.
  • Create and/or update maps using GIS for plants/facilities, river systems, and watersheds where OPG operates its hydroelectric generating stations.
  • Manage attribute data for water resources engineering, dam safety, and public safety.
  • Integrate GIS maps into the corporate Geocortex systems.
  • Assist with the development and updating of governance, procedures, forms and work instructions.
  • Work with SharePoint and other corporate document management storage and sharing systems.


  • Minimum completion of 3rd year at a University specializing in Civil Engineering with courses in Hydrotechnical / Water Resources Engineering and GIS.


Preference may be given to the candidate who has the following skills and qualifications:

  • Knowledge of Hydrotechnical / Water Resources Engineering and experience in Hydrologic and Hydraulic modeling.
  • Knowledge of principles and practices of GIS, database, and mapping.
  • Proficient with ESRI ArcMap and familiar with ArcGIS extensions.

This job will provide you with the following professional development:

  • Introduction to the hydroelectric industry including dams and reservoirs.
  • Experience in practical application of hydrologic and hydraulic modeling skills.
  • Opportunity to use GIS and related skills for practical applications.
  • Accountability to plan, execute, and complete projects independently and as part of a team.
  • Introduction to various document management systems.
  • Exposure to Dam Safety and Public Safety around dams.
