JOB OVERVIEW

 

Ontario Power Generation (OPG) is looking for a results oriented financial professional to join our team in the role of Business & Finance Advisor on a contract basis, in our Niagara Falls, ON location.

 

Reporting to the Regional Controller, the Business & Finance Advisor plays a key role in providing advice, co-ordination, development, review and maintenance of strategies, policies, procedures, internal controls and systems in the areas of financial management and reporting for OPG’s South Central Operations (Niagara, Gravenhurst and Nanticoke Solar).  Coordinating the budget preparation and regular variance reporting, both internal and to external agencies. Develop budgets and provide reporting through to external agencies including the OEB, OPA/IESO. Provide financial/economic analysis to support business operations.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • Monitor and analyse variances between actual and budged expenditures.  Ensure uniformity of financial reporting requirements and conformance to established guidelines and direction provided by external funding agencies, Corporate, Business Unit or Plant Management.
  • Carry out analysis, data reduction and other financial procedures necessary to ensure a viable and dynamic document.  Ensure Business Plan and Operational Plan have been properly priced and that costs have been correctly accounted for.
  • Develop, prepare and issue budget/business plan instructions to various locations, ensuring that the specific requirements are met.  Provide direct assistance with budget instructions and submission including establishment of cost guidelines.
  • Develop budgets and provide reporting through to external agencies including regulatory bodies e.g., Ontario Energy Board (OEB), Ontario Power Authority (OPA), Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO). 
  • Develop and implement financial systems and related controls to gather and compile data to produce and develop business information for budget and business plan purposes.  Assess their effectiveness and recommend changes or improvements to systems as necessary.
  • Provide advice, training and guidance to line management and support staff regarding all manners of financial issues.
  • Prepare and/or assess business case summaries to ensure that the business case and financial evaluation are complete and accurate.
  • Review, interpret and develop policies and procedures related to financial management and control, as directed.
  • Assess the internal control structure in the Plant and develop an integrated management control framework, address internal control weaknesses and specify programs for improvement. 
  • Maintain the computerized financial evaluation model and station cost model and assist line groups in the use of these systems. 

 

EDUCATION

  • 4 year university business degree specializing in accounting
  • Accounting Designation - CPA (CMA, CA or CGA)

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • 6+ years of directed related experience in the key responsibilities of this position e.g., controllership, management accounting, internal financial reporting, statement preparation, etc.;
  • Experience in the analysis of direct and indirect costs to identify attributable costs of proposals, and compare internal and external service costs and calculate the best financial return;
  • Experience in a similar type of consultative role that provided effective financial guidance to line managers;
  • Demonstrated experience providing financial reporting for large multi-year, multi-discipline projects/partnerships with multiple entities;  
  • Demonstrated experience in establishing financial and accounting policies and control processes;
  • Sense of urgency and decision making skills conducive to managing priorities and meeting internal and external timelines;
  • A results-oriented focus is essential, as is the ability to work in a fast-paced changing environment and effectively manage several projects simultaneously;
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; ability to influence and communicate effectively across the company and externally at all levels;
  • Excellent leadership and management skills, sound judgment and decision making, critical thinking and creative problem solving;
  • High level of proficiency with the use of information technology tools such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Access and Outlook.
  • Affinity for using technology to find efficient ways to collate and disseminate knowledge;
  • Experience using large financial or integrated enterprise systems such as Asset Suite 7.
