JOB OVERVIEW

 

Ontario Power Generation (OPG) is looking for dynamic, strategic and results-driven professional to join our team in the role of Mechanical Technician.

 

In a TERM employee role at OPG, you will be supporting the Darlington Maintenance organization up until 2026. As a condition of employment, you will be required to become a member of the United Association (UA), Local 46. You will receive an attractive wage in accordance with the OPG – PWU collective agreement and a pension and benefit package through Local 46.

 

Following your TERM position, as a member of the UA, you will have access to long-term employment opportunities, attractive wages, benefits, and pension in accordance with the UA collective agreement while working with OPG, or one of its vendor partners, on future projects in Nuclear and Renewable Generation, including Small Modular Reactors and Pickering Safe Storage. 

 

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES 

 

A Welder permanently joins pieces of metal or manufactured parts using metal filler and heat and/or pressure; builds structures and repairs broken or cracked parts according to specifications; and carries out special processes, such as welding studs and brazing. Specifically, a Welder:

  • Lays out, cuts, and forms metals to specifications
  • Fits sub-assemblies and assemblies together and preparing assemblies for welding
  • Uses three major types of welding: arc, gas, and resistance
  • Uses various welding and cutting processes to join structural steel and cut metal in vessels, piping and other components
  • Fabricates parts, tools, machines and equipment
  • Joins parts being manufactured, builds structures and repairs damaged or worn parts
  • Controls for quality before, during and after welding.
     

EDUCATION

 

  • Have a minimum Grade 12 education

 

QUALIFICATIONS

 

  • Hold a valid Certificate of Qualification (456A) or have 5+ years’ experience Pipe/welding with GTAW process on stainless steel & carbon steel;
  • Must be able to pass a 6G open root pipe test using the GTAW & SMAW processes (F6-F4).  The test specimen will then be subjected to NDE examination (non-destructive evaluation) consisting of visual, radiographic and destructive inspections for evaluation;
  • 5+ years’ experience, transferable CWB;
  • Successfully pass all formal examinations during the initial training period including Radiation Protection;
  • Be prepared to work a rotating 12-hour shift, including weekend and holidays;
  • Have exceptional problem solving abilities;
  • Possess strong communication and interpersonal skills;
  • Have a high comfort level with computers;
  • If applicable, have Canadian equivalency of foreign education; and
  • Be eligible to work in Canada.
