JOB OVERVIEW 

Ontario Power Generation (OPG) is looking for a dynamic, strategic and results-driven professional to join our team in the role of Rad Protection & Safety Tech. 

 

Reporting to the Radiation Protection Field Manager, this position is responsible for maintaining the Radiation Protection program at Darlington Nuclear.

 

 

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES  

  • Assist in the development and implementation of new testing procedures and methods for radiological and dosimetry analyses.
  • Assist line management in the implementation of local and corporate programs relative to concerns regarding health physics, radiation protection, health and safety issues, and emergency preparedness and response plans. Collect, compile and assess information as necessary to prepare reports.
  • Be accountable for the health, safety and well being of self and others, in accordance with technical/ operating procedures and standards, including the development of technical/operating solutions to problems.
  • Be responsible for all aspects of operating assigned equipment and systems. Perform basic maintenance on related equipment. Carry out a variety of measurements including inspection, maintenance and testing of health physics, radiation protection and conventional safety equipment and processes to recognized standards and procedures.
  • Develop and maintain a reporting system to provide feedback for controlling work, materials, costs and other purposes.
  • Establish and maintain technical specifications for instruments, computer hardware and software. Order and connect instruments and computer equipment; install vendor-supplied software as required. Perform commissioning tests on new or repaired instruments, computer equipment and materials, and write reports on the results. Interface with software developers to ensure that software applications are developed in accordance with the specifications. Inspect, troubleshoot, calibrate and repair instruments, computers and software, consulting with suppliers and requesting their assistance as necessary. Using standard office commercial software for spreadsheet and database applications, develop new computer applications to calculate results, verify results for accuracy, and prepare charts and summaries. Maintain inventory of instruments, and computer hardware and software.
  • Maintain specific Radiation Protection (RP) programs such as licensed source control. Provide RP technical assistance and troubleshooting to internal and external personnel. Carry out, or participate in the development and implementation of programs related to RP. Perform field inspections and surveys to ensure compliance with policies, practices and procedures. Carry out or participate in investigations of incidents/accidents.
  • Participate in commissioning activities associated with new or modified equipment and instruments, and with plant modifications.
  • Perform industrial hygiene sampling and analyses; such as asbestos; ammonia, H2S detection; confined space checks; noise sampling; identify 'buddy areas'; microwaves; perform heat stress measurements; check dust fallout outside the plant; SO2; breathing air; ozone; air quality; sewage system monitoring; etc., activities according to established procedures. Perform various tests as required.
  • Provide technical expertise in the areas of health physics, radiation protection, and conventional safety issues as they relate to the workplace, including workplace hazards, and to the environment. Interpret health and safety legislation as it affects the workplace. Carry out both nonstandard and special tests and analyses, associated with health physics, radiation protection, hazardous material identification, and associated monitoring processes.

 

QUALIFICATIONS 

  • Grade 12 or equivalent, plus three years of study in a related field.
  • Class 7 shipper

The base salary range considers many factors including, but not limited to experience, education, and training, including any collective agreement requirements for union represented positions. It is not typical for the salary to be offered near the top of the range, and salary is dependent on numerous factors. For management roles, the base salary range does not represent the total compensation package. The total compensation package for regular full-time management roles includes pay-for-performance programs for annual and medium time periods.
