Ontario Power Generation (OPG) is looking for dynamic and consultative professionals to join our team in the roles of Health Physicist for our Radiation Protection Programs & ALARA Section, located at Darlington Nuclear Generating Station, Ontario.


Reporting to the Section Manager, the Health Physicist performs radiation protection duties in assigned areas of the radiation safety programs across the organization, enterprise wide.  This includes carrying out various responsibilities regarding radiation safety as it pertains to the protection of personnel and the general public residing in the vicinity of OPG’s generation stations and facilities.

Through a collaborative relationship with the Section Manager, the successful candidate will provide the following:


  • Solve radiation problems arising specifically in the reactor units at an independent multi-unit nuclear station having three or more units, and assess on a continuing basis the effectiveness of such solutions.
  • Formulate new or revised Radiation Protection Regulations for consideration, possible approval and use throughout OPG's nuclear generating stations.
  • Assist Supervisor in the operations of the internal and external dosimetry service at station or site and in the estimated measurement of internal and in the estimation of external doses received in unusual situations.
  • Participate in the development of training courses and other training material and conduct such courses. Assist in the maintenance of a continuous program through re-examination of plant personnel to sustain a high level of radiation protection knowledge of the station.
  • Prepare routine reports on station radiological conditions and assist in the preparation of reports for outside regulatory authorities on the radiation protection program in the station. Further, prepare technical reports on radiation safety programs and make recommendations for improvements including leveraging the use of new technologies in promoting a safer working environment and supporting As Low As Reasonably Achievable dose reduction programs;
  • Investigate non-routine radiation protection problems and make recommendations as to their resolution and assist Supervisor in environmental radiological measurements made in the vicinity of the station.
  • Carry out radiation investigations and duties, such as the controlling of the transfer of radioactive material from the station.
  • Interpret regulations and policy and provide technical assistance in health physics to the operations group and approve radiation protection methods and equipment.
  • At the request of the Supervisor provide information and advice to design groups for design changes which will improve radiation protection at the nuclear station.
  • Perform other duties as required.
  • Review and approve (as appropriate) the radiological aspects of plant design, operating and maintenance manuals, and work procedures;



  • Bachelors Degree with a focus in Health Physics, Medical Physics, Radiation Science, Chemistry Engineering and/or a relevant study is required;
  • (RPT) Radiation Protection Technologist Certification or (CHP) Certified Health Physicist is an asset; and
  • NRRPT registration from the National Registry of Radiation Protection Technologists is an asset;




We are seeking a seasoned, results-oriented Health Physicist with the following:   


  • Minimum 6 years of progressive experience, 3-5 years of experience as a health physicist in a related industry / industrial unionized environment.  A candidate with lesser years of experience and/or a recent graduate from health physics, medical physics, or radiation science we would be open to consider into a more junior leveled role as a Assistant Health Physicist;
  • Experience and exposure from working in/for a highly industrial industry such as; utilities, energy, power, automotive, mining, or manufacturing where gained knowledge and experience in radiation protection policies/standards and procedures is preferred;
  • Knowledge and understanding of chemistry, physics or nuclear engineering and appropriate related mathematics, to understand and apply radiation theories in the assessment of radiation hazards and the development of radiation protection practices;
  • Experience with radiation protection and the related problems that can arise within large nuclear plants and the methods used in dealing with them; expertise with radiation instrumentation, electronics and wireless technologies would be a particular asset;
  • Knowledgeable of related legislation and its influence and our responsibilities to the general public;
  • Experience in implementing and enforcing compliance with various radiation protection and safety programs;
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; ability to influence and communicate effectively across the company and externally at all levels to a wide variety of people.  Effective documentation, procedure instruction, presentation and reporting writing skills are required; experience in managing projects involving cross functional teams would be an asset;
  • Broad conceptual, diagnostic and analytical skills; ability to reach well grounded, independent conclusions and influence outcomes;
  • Strong interpersonal skills, experience in shaping and maintaining productive relationships and partnership across the business unit / among all stakeholders. Be a trusted and honest broker;
  • Demonstrate critical thinking skills, experience in leading problem-solving while providing consultant/specialist services;
  • A results-oriented focus, with the ability to work independently in a fast-paced changing environment and effectively manage several projects simultaneously;
  • Commitment to high standards of procedural safety and regulatory compliance;
  • Database query skills such as SQL and MS Access would be consider as an asset
  • Specialized software and programming skills such as MCNP and/or deterministic shielding design approach
  • Possess a valid driver's license.
