Ontario Power Generation (OPG) is looking for a professional, results driven Nuclear Refurbishment Field Construction Coordinator to join our team on an up to 36 month long temporary contract.


The Darlington Nuclear Station is embarking on a refurbishment program that will extend the operating life for 30 years.  OPG and its’ vendors are deploying advanced automated tooling to remove and replace reactor components to meet the stringent nuclear standards for construction.


Reporting to Construction Manager, the Field Construction Coordinator will provide leadership, strategic and proactive support to the Field Construction Team and work as the Constructor’s Project Managers Supervisor of the Work delegate as per OHSA 213/91, ensuring that contractors employed on the Darlington Refurbishment project execute their work safely as per OHSA and utilizing best work practices; with special focus on Work Protection and Confined Space regulations.

  • Spending 80% or greater of your time each day in the field as you perform observations and follow‐up.
  • The Field Construction Coordinator’s field presence will be risk based and will consider Vendor activities critical steps, verification witness, hold points, external/internal OPEX and risk ratings/ assessments.
  • Representing OPG’s interests, and committing to coach, correct, report, and follow‐up on a daily basis.
  • Attending Pre‐Job Brief’s (PJB’s), reinforcing safety as the overriding principal, ensuring critical steps, hazards involved, and hazard elimination/mitigation strategies discussed are acceptable.
  • Completing daily Observation Reports, Work Reports and participating in Self Assessments where required.  Ensuring all reports are fact based, and always respectful of Vendor teams and OPG organizations.
  • Fostering a positive and supportive relationship with Vendors while holding to high standards.
  • Stopping work to protect the health and safety of workers, the public, or value of the asset.
  • Gaining and maintaining specific oversight qualifications through OPG Training.
  • Participating in all levels of Risk Reviews daily, weekly, and monthly.
  • Addressing field conditions and staff in a professional manner, while ensuring safety is held to the highest standard.
  • Becoming familiar with the following, prior to the commencement of work:
    • Scope of work, including the review of critical steps, safety related or complex tasks, and Operational Experience (OPEX)
    • Oversight plan, and risk mitigating strategies.
  • Performing field observations, recording observations made, and utilizing OPG and Field Construction Processes for the following items:
    • Sampling to check for compliance to key requirements such as place keeping, worker qualifications, work plan revisions, pre job briefing, Radiation Exposure Permits (REPs), lift plans, etc.
    • Performing paired observations with other personnel and Vendor Teams; OPG/Vendor Safety Personnel, OPG Supervision, OPG/Vendor SME’s, and Contractor Supervision.
    • Checking the qualification requirements for Vendor resources and confirm via sampling that all workers and their supervisors are qualified. This activity includes the applicable sub‐trades involved.
    • Validating that supplemental personnel understand expectations and have sound knowledge of the approved OPG or contractor procedures, policies, event free tools, and error prevention techniques.
  • Check to ensure that the supervision of supplemental personnel is in place and that oversight activities are being executed as planned and documented.
  • Ensure ‘New to Nuclear’ workers are identified and supported.



  • Successful completion of Grade XII, plus 3 years' further concentrated formalized study in an applicable field



  • 6 (six) years or more of field experience in a nuclear plant, technical services, or industrial construction environment.
  • Prior hands on experience in a Field Oversight Role (i.e. - Foreman/GF/FLM/Superintendent)
  • Work Protection and Confined Space expertise
  • Two or more years of experience specifically on Nuclear Refurbishment Project is an asset
  • Working knowledge of CANDU reactor components is an asset
  • Experience and familiarity with Nuclear Facility Safety Procedures and Practices, including Radiation Protection and Personal Protective Equipment is an asset
  • Strong communication skills; both written and oral,
  • Ability to effectively communicate with internal and external stakeholders, ability to prepare concise reports.
  • Required to work a rotating shift on a regular basis, including weekends and nights.
  • Must hold a valid G-class driver’s license in good standing.
