A sustainable future with renewable power generation.

Clean Air Made in Ontario

Across Ontario, from Cornwall to Kenora, OPG and our many partners are working to ensure a sustainable future with clean air, strong economies and liveable communities. That’s because we believe our purpose goes beyond generating electricity. That’s why in 2014, we closed the last of our coal plants. Now our electricity is more than 99% free of smog and carbon emissions, which helps battle climate change and keeps the air clean for all Ontarians.

Hydroelectric Generation

Hydroelectric power is a timeless, renewable resource that has fuelled Ontario's economic growth since the beginning of the 20th century. Today, it accounts for more than one-third of Ontario Power Generation's (OPG’s) electricity production. Hydroelectric generation, our lowest-cost power source, produced 30.4 terawatt hours in 2015.

Thermal Generation

In April of 2014, Ontario Power Generation (OPG) burned its last piece of coal to generate electricity in Ontario. This move off coal was North America’s single largest climate change initiative and the equivalent of taking seven million cars off the road. OPG owns five thermal electricity-generating stations with the Atikokan generating station being the largest 100% biomass-fueled power plant in North America; generating more than 200 MW of generating capacity.
